Protests: Police ban MDC Masvingo demo

MASVINGO— The Nelson Chamisa-led MDC has faced yet another setback after the police here issued a prohibition order against the planned demonstrations today, August 21.
This is the fourth time the police have banned MDC protests with Harare, Bulawayo and Gweru meeting the same fate.
On Tuesday, the police arrested MDC Masvingo provincial administrator Peter Chigaba who has been distributing fliers mobilising people for the demo.
MDC Masvingo provincial chairperson James Gumbi was also summoned for questioning before being released.
Chigaba was due to appear in court today but his case has been moved to Friday.
Gumbi said they are making an appeal at the High Court today challenging the prohibition order.
The police issued us with a prohibition order yesterday evening and we are appealing today. Some of our members were arrested yesterday and I was also summoned for questioning,” said Gumbi.
The courts have thrown out all the MDC applications in Harare, Gweru and Bulawayo.
There has been heavy police presence in the city with most shops still closed assessing the situation while others have opened past their opening hours.
