Police nab foreign national, seize one kg of cocaine

Police on Sunday arrested foreign national, Onuoha Desmond Onyii (46) at the Victoria Falls International airport after he was found in possession of approximately one kg of cocaine stashed in the linings of hats and jackets.

The seizure comes as Zimbabwe’s ports of entry has seen a spike in drug trafficking.

Earlier this month a female tourist from India was arrested at Victoria Falls Airport trying to smuggle more than nine kgs of heroin worth close to US$500 000.

Shaikh Zeenat Khatoon Rafiq (43) from Mumbai in India, had entered the country through the same airport on September 20, police said.

She was arrested by detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department, Drugs and Narcotics in Victoria Falls after they received information that she was in possession of heroin which she intended to smuggle to India via Ethiopia.

Rafiq appeared before Victoria Falls magistrate Mr Godswill Mavenge charged with unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs in contravention of Section 156 (1) (a) of the Code.

Elsewhere, police intercepted heroin the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport from Latvian national Vitalis Kudrjasovs on September 8 before boarding a flight to Addis Ababa, with his final destination listed as New Delhi in India.

He allegedly had 8kg of heroin stuffed in the lining of his bag.

In July this year, a Brazilian national and two Zimbabweans linked to the discovery of 243 grams of heroin were jailed for seven years each.

Karoline Silver Mafra, 23, Patience Murinda, 32, and her husband Slegfriend Zibusiso Ndlovu, 33, were jailed seven years each, but conditionally suspended two years leaving them to serve an effective five years each.
