- Audit initiated after police deployed in mineral rich areas accumulated wealth overnight
POLICE officers who were deployed to provide security in mineral-rich areas and became wealthy overnight are the target of an on-going audit, Zim Morning Post can reveal.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) recently launched an audit, specifically to establish the number of vehicles owned each by members of the police service.
The audit requires that all members of the service submit the required information pertaining to the value of their vehicles not later than January 21.
According to a police memo, information being sought includes the type of vehicles members of the service own and their vehicles, including names of the sellers of the vehicles and dates of purchase.
The audit comes as the police service is clamping on rampant corruption among its personnel.
Insiders told Zim Morning Post that the personal wealth of members of the police service deployed in mineral rich areas has taken a quantum leap but is without any paper trail.
Machete gangs and artisanal miners are said to have been part of a well-ochestrated money scheme that paid rent to police officers who would then cast a blind eye on their illegal operations.
