Nakamba helps Luton Town secure fairytale promotion to English Premier League

LONDON – Luton Town made history on Saturday by securing promotion to the Premier League for the first time in the club’s history.

Zimbabwe international Marvelous Nakamba played a key role in the Championship side’s success story.

Nakamba joined Luton Town on loan from Aston Villa in January and played the entire match as Luton Town beat Coventry City in the Championship play-off final at Wembley 6-5 on penalties yesterday.

During Saturday’s final, Nakamba was impressive at the heart of the Luton Town midfield before he went on to score a crucial penalty during the penalty shootout, calmly slotting the ball past Ben Wilson in the Coventry goal with no mistake.

Nakamba’s display in the playoff final at Wembley capped off what has been a memorable stint at the club, which is also home to fellow Zimbabwe international Admiral Muskwe.

Nakamba was handed a camera by Luton’s social media team to say a few words after the game. The Zimbabwean, who was clearly emotional, said: “The town is up. The town is up now. For you. The town is up. We did it together. Together!”

His future at Villa Park is unclear. Nakamba played very little football in the two seasons prior to his loan move to Luton in January. He has 12 months remaining on his Villa contract.
