HARARE — Freelance journalist Judith Nyuke, 39, died Saturday after she was struck by a Geo Pomona waste collection truck along Harare Drive near Art Farm in Pomona, police said.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police said the fatal road traffic accident occurred at about 3:30 p.m.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating a fatal road traffic accident in which Judith Nyuke (39) died after being struck by a Geo Pomona truck along Harare Drive near Art Farm in Pomona, Harare,” police said in a statement.
Police said further details would be released as investigations continued.
Nyuke was a journalist who specialised in court reporting and had previously worked with H-Metro and 263Chat.
Geo Pomona Waste Management, which is contracted by the City of Harare for waste collection, confirmed that one of its trucks was involved in the accident and said it was “profoundly saddened” by Nyuke’s death.
“Geo Pomona is deeply saddened by this loss and extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and wider media community during this extremely difficult time,” the company said.
Geo Pomona said it had begun an internal review and was cooperating with authorities investigating the circumstances of the accident.
“Geo Pomona takes this incident with the utmost seriousness. The company has initiated an internal review and is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities as they establish the circumstances surrounding the incident,” it said.
The company said it would refrain from providing further details while police investigations were underway to avoid speculation and out of respect for Nyuke’s family.
Geo Pomona also said it would engage Nyuke’s family and provide appropriate support.
