Hre City Council employees awarded cushioning allowance

HARARE City Council (HCC) employees were on Thursday awarded an allowance to cushion them against salary erosion caused by the hyper-inflationary environment.

The city fathers resolved to give their employees a cushioning allowance of ZWL300 backdated to November 1, 2019.

Parties, including the Harare Municipal Workers’ Union (HMWU), Zimbabwe Urban Councils Workers’ Union (ZUCWU), Water and Allied Workers’ Union of Zimbabwe (WAWUZ) and Zimbabwe Allied Municipal Workers’ Union (ZAMWU) entered into a collective bargaining agreement .

This was done in accordance with provisions of the Employment Council Municipality Constitution.

Addressing media on Thursday, chairperson of the Human Resources and General Purposes Committee, Councillor Jacob Mafume, said the parties had reached a consensus to award a cushioning allowance of three hundred Zimdollars per employee across the board, effective November 1, 2019.

“HCC employees will be given a sum of ZWL200 per month to clear the arrears from previous collective bargaining agreements,’ he said.

Mafume also said the cost of living adjustment(COLA) of the 2019 arbitration matter would be withdrawn to allow for fresh COLA negotiations.

The lowest paid HCC employee now gets ZWL1 108.
