Harare Lawyer Kudzayi Kadzere was detained by the police on Sunday after going to the police station to file a report about the abuse he had received from the police.
Kadzere was assaulted by the police on Saturday after he sought to provide legal services to Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activists who were being apprehended on charges of breaching the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act.
The lawyer is accused of escaping from lawful custody and disorderly conduct.
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said the human rights lawyer together with his lawyer Nontokozo Dube-Tachiona, was in the process of filing a police report for assault, when he was apprehended.
ZRP are alleging that Kadzere escaped from lawful custody and also accuse him of criminal nuisance.
“Our lawyers led by Nontokozo Dube-Tachiona have now got human rights lawyer advocate Kadzere released from police custody to allow him to be attended to by doctors after he sustained a fracture on his hand following a barbaric assault by police,” ZLHR said in a statement.
Kadzere will appear in court on Thursday answering to charges of criminal nuisance.
Kadzere’s arrest comes after that of two CCC lawmakers Amos Chibaya and Costa Machingauta alongside 23 activists on Saturday.
The group was arrested while attending the party’s private meeting at Machingauta’s residence, accused of breaching the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act.
