Boxer Taurai Zimunya died Monday at Parirenyatwa Hospital, hours after suffering several blows to the head during a non-title bout hosted in Borrowdale on October 31.

He was just 24.

Zimunya was a licensed professional boxer and collapsed in the third round of a six round non-title bout.

Officials said “all the necessary medical procedures were followed and emergency medical assistance was provided at the venue before he was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital where he received further medical care.”

Autopsy report on the actual cause of his death is yet to be obtained from the experts.

“The boxing fraternity has indeed been shaken by this unfortunate incident,” said Lawrence Zimbudzana, Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board secretary general.

“As the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board, we join the Zimunya family, friends and the entire boxing fraternity in mourning the untimely death of a budding boxer,” he continued.

“Burial arrangements will be announced in due course once we are advised by his family. May His Dear Soul Rest In Eternal Peace.”
