A teacher at the ZRP Support Unit College has been fined US$200 after assaulting a Form 1 student with a small horsepipe for making noise during class, which led to the student requiring medical treatment

Brian Muza, 35, pleaded guilty to assault charges when he appeared before a Harare magistrate charged with assault.

Receiving a wholly suspended five-month prison sentence for five years on the condition of good behavior, Muza also incurred a US$200 fine due by May 9th.

According to court papers, Muza is a teacher to the complainant who is 12 years old.

The State proved that on the 12 March 2025 at around 0800hrs, the complainant who is a class monitor collected books of previous ending lesson and went to the staff room to hand over the books to Mr Nhamo the Building teacher.

On his way out of the classroom he met the accused person who was the Teacher-On-Duty at the door on his way into the classroom where the students were making a lot of noise.

The accused person entered the classroom and administered corporal punishment to all students for making noise.

When he was done, he met the complainant at the door and other students told the accused that the complainant had sneaked out of the classroom in order to evade punishment for making noise.

Muza then punished the complainant by whipping him five times with a small horse pipe on the buttocks.

The complainant went home and slept on the sofa on his stomach crying in pain.

Complainant’s aunt asked him what had happened and he narrated what had transpired at school.

She took the complainant to Mabvuku clinic where they were referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment before she went to ZRP Highlands to make a Police report.
