Zimbabwe’s Parliament to vote on election fees after court order

Zimbabwe’s lawmakers are expected to vote today on whether to keep or change the nomination fees for candidates in the upcoming harmonised elections.

The Constitutional Court had ordered Parliament to review the fees, which were challenged by a political party leader who said they were too high and unconstitutional.

The fees, which were gazetted in May, are US$20 000 for presidential candidates and US$1 000 for MPs. The elections are scheduled for August 23 and the Nomination Court will sit on June 21.
