The Meteorological Services Department has made a  forecast that gusty winds will prevail across the country urging the public to desist from starting unmonitored fires, Zim Morning Post can report.

“Windy and relatively dry conditions are highly conducive for runaway forest fires the public is urged not to start any uncontrolled fires,” the department said in a statement Wednesday morning.

The department said areas such as Harare, Masvingo, Manicaland, Midlands and Mashonaland East will be windy, cloudy with a cooler morning and getting warmer in the afternoon.

During the period between the 31st of July and the 31st of October each year, the likelihood of runaway fires is very high due to the conducive environment which includes the availability of dry flammable material, wind and heat.

Recently, Manicaland was hit by Cyclone Idai which left a trail of destruction and government has pledged to increase disaster preparedness.
