Vhenekai Dhemba’s nine gold medal haul at the just ended CANA Zone IV swimming championships in Namibia last week saw her scoop the aggregate winner in the 12 and under girls’ division.
Swimmers from 14 African countries competed at the event.
“We also won the ‘Spirit Cup’ as a team which is given to the team who showed the most support for their swimmers in the true spirit of the competition – friendly rivalry among young eager athletes,” Zimbabwe swimming team manager Tracey Doorman said.
Zimbabwe’s fledgling swimmers won a total 36 medals – 13 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze – to finish fourth behind Mauritius, Namibia and South Africa.
