ZEP holders rejoice as court stops Home Affairs from deporting them

The Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP) holders have won a major victory against the Department of Home Affairs, which wanted to end their legal status in South Africa.

The Pretoria High Court has issued an interdict in favour of the Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF), which protects the ZEP holders from being arrested, deported and detained by the department.

The court also ordered that ZEP holders should be free to travel in and out of South Africa with their valid passports and immigration documents.

The interdict will last until the court makes a final ruling on the HSF’s challenge to the decision to terminate the ZEP system, which was argued in April.
