Poor Malawian tax payers to foot Mutharika’s electoral appeal… as president hires SA law firm

Malawi's constitutional court annulled last year's controversial election, which saw President Peter Mutharika narrowly re-elected. Mutharika appealed and lost.

MALAWIAN President Peter Mutharika has hired a South African law firm, Mboweni Maluleke Inc Attorneys, to appeal the court ruling that set aside the 2019 presidential election.

Mutharika was charged US$788 500.00 for the whole process.

In an agreement seen by Zim Morning Post that was signed between Mutharika and his South African lawyers, the payment would be made in two batches, with 50% expected to be done on March 13, with the remainder due upon completion of the matter.

Mutharika assigned his lawyers to “advise (with the) preparation and prosecution of the appeal noted in the Malawi Supreme Court”.

The Malawian Constitutional Court annulled the presidential election of May 2019 and ordered new elections in 150 days.

However, the President and Malawi Electoral Commission are appealing the judgement, citing widespread irregularities in the judgement.
