HARARE, Zimbabwe — Bashford Munetsi, a self-proclaimed prophet with the Johane Masowe eChishanu sect and owner of StarBash Agencies, a detergents and hardware business, is facing multiple allegations of rape and sexual misconduct from women in his congregation and community.
One of the cases has reportedly reached the Rotten Row Clerk of Court but has not yet proceeded, as authorities are still gathering evidence.
In one case, a woman told police that Munetsi offered her a lift while she was on her way to church. She alleged that instead of dropping her off, he diverted to the TM Pick n Pay parking lot in Ruwa, where he threatened her and raped her inside his vehicle.
In another alleged incident, a congregant said Munetsi invited her to his home in Timire Park, Ruwa, when his wife and children were away. There, he allegedly forced himself on her. The woman reportedly has not made a formal police complaint, fearing it could lead to the breakdown of her marriage.
Another allegation involves a girl who was reportedly in Munetsi’s custody. Church members from the Masowe congregation in Highfield (paMaGamu) claimed he sexually abused the girl. The matter was allegedly dropped after the victim’s family was pressured by other congregants not to pursue it.
A church member, speaking anonymously, said, “A number of members have withdrawn from the church due to these widespread allegations. Some women who had similar experiences are ready to testify in court if given the chance.”
Others alleged Munetsi used social media to contact female congregants, offering visa assistance in exchange for sexual favors, though many of those attempts were reportedly unsuccessful.
One accusation involves a 15-year-old girl who claimed Munetsi fondled her and gave her US$5 to keep quiet.
Police said they have received at least one official report and are investigating the matter. Munetsi could not be reached for comment.
