Mupfumi robbed of US$52,000

Esau Mupfumi, a ZANU PF central committee member and aspiring Mutare Central parliamentary candidate, was robbed of US$52 000 at gunpoint on Sunday night at his Gold Class garage in Mutare city.

The veteran businessman and politician confirmed the incident yesterday, but declined to give more details as police were still investigating the matter.

“I lost US$52 000 to armed robbers yesterday at night at my Gold Class garage. Investigations are on-going. I cannot comment any further as detectives are still looking into the case,” Mupfumi said.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Nobert Muzondo also verified the robbery, but said he did not have full details yet.

“Mupfumi was robbed, but I don’t have full details now as police detectives are still attending to the scene,” Muzondo said.

Mupfumi runs a passenger transport business besides being a politician.
Zimbabwe has witnessed a surge in armed robbery cases amid a deteriorating economy and high unemployment.
