WASHINGTON – Third-tier club Michigan Stars FC on Sunday lifted the 2022 National Independent Soccer Association championship trophy after downing ALBION San Diego 1-0.
The result handed former Warriors and Dynamos goalkeeper Tatenda Mkuruva his first major silverware since arriving in the United States of America three years ago.
The winning moment came at the 30-minute mark when an Anthony Bowie header found the back of the net. As it has done all year, MSFC capitalized off a set piece, this time a corner off the boot of Steven Juncaj.
From there, it was MSFC’s defense held tight.
ALBION’s best opportunity came in the first half when forward Mayele Malango broke free for a chance on the right just inside the 18yard box but an aggressive, sliding close by MFSC keeper Tatenda Mkuruva thwarted the shot.
Zimbabwe is currently isolated from international football as the country is serving FIFA suspension over government interference.
