Police have made a dramatic arrest with the capture of 35-year-old Zimbabwean football star Winston Mhango of ZPC Kariba Football Club. Mhango was apprehended in possession of mbanje, codeine, Benilyn, and other illicit cough syrups, following a tip-off from members of the public.
Police spokesperson Paul Nyathiconfirmed the arrest and added that investigations are still ongoing. “We managed to get a tip-off from members of the public that Mhango was dealing in illicit drugs. Police raided his house in Mahombekombe and recovered mbanje, codeine, and other cough syrups.”
Mhango, a former player of Hwange FC, Platinum Highlanders, and Kabwe Warriors (Zambia), is currently detained at Kariba Police Station and facing an appearance in Kariba Magistrates Court today.
Nyathi also noted they are yet to establish the original source of the drugs. “We are still investigating the source of the drugs and to establish if Mhango was the supplier in the trade.”
This arrest comes on the heels of President Mnangagwa’s call for an unremitting fight against substance abuse, which has become a growing concern for Zimbabwean society. So far, more than 4,000 drug abusers and peddlers have been apprehended in an operation to stem drug and substance abuse.
