Man in court for defrauding Chitown MP $170k

A Chitungwiza man has appeared in court today for duping Zengeza East member of Parliament Goodrich Chimbaira an amount of RTGS170 000 from his Community Development Fund (CDF) coffers while disguising to be a borehole driller.

Lloyd Goto (26) appeared before Chitungwiza resident magistrate Ms Feresi Chakanyuka facing fraud charges.

He pleaded not guilty.

He was remanded out of custody to June 6 next month on a $1 000 bail.

The state prosecutor Norman Koropi alleged that on 10 February 2020, Chimbaira approached Goto who had mispresented himself to be a borehole driller with a company called Clecon Enterprises.

The legislator contracted him to drill one borehole and make three installations of water tanks, solar panels and taps on that borehole and two other boreholes that had already been drilled at a fee of $170 034.

Chimbaira transferred the amount on Goto’s NMB account number and he promised to complete the work within five days after receiving payment

The court heard that sometime in April after failing to complete the job Goto then went to Chimbaira’s home and left 5 000 water litre tank, 2 by 200 metres poly pipe and 2 by 300 watts solar panels to his wife who was present.

Efforts to contact Goto were fruitless as he ended up ignoring Chimbaira’s calls but the latter met the accused person on May 15 and took him to the police station where he got arrested.

Only $36 813 was recovered.
