Kombi driver up for reckless driving

A MABVUKU man was on Tuesday arrested on allegations of reckless driving and refusal to take instructions from on-duty police officers.

Forty-year-old Edmore Namkumba is facing allegations of driving through a red traffic light and failure to stop after being instructed do do so by uniformed police officers.

Accused appeared Thursday before Rumbidzai Mugwagwa at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts.

It is the State’s case that on January 28, accused was driving a Toyota Hiace, picking passengers at corner Robert Mugabe and Julius Nyerere Street.

The State claims that at around 10am, a team of police officers who were on patrol blocked Namkumba’s way with their vehicle.

The officers were on the lookout for motorists picking and dropping passengers at undesignated places in the Central Business District.

Accused allegedly sped off in efforts to evade arrest.

According to the State, Namkumba went into Robert Mugabe Avenue, ignoring police orders for him to stop.

The court heard that police pursued the Hiace driver, intending to effect arrest on him.

At the Robert Mugabe and Angwa Street intersection, the accused allegedly proceeded against the red traffic light.

Namkumba is also alleged to have proceeded along Angwa due north and again passed through a red traffic light at the intersection of Angwa Street and Nelson Mandela Avenue.

Accused was finally apprehended by police manning the Harare-Mutare Highway.

The State opposed bail.
