Hre municipality partners with Indian reusable diapers manufacturers

·        HCC obtain revenue from Raphaella Eco-Diapers for refuse trucks

·        EMA lobby government to ban disposable diapers

HARARE City Council (HCC) has partnered with an Indian firm Raphaella Eco-Diapers Company to advertise reusable and eco-friendly diapers and increase revenue generation.

According to the recent minutes, Town Clerk Hosiah Chisango said the company produces and distributes reusable diapers which are environmentally friendly.

“The use of eco-diapers is insurmountable and the revenue obtained from the advertising is ring-fenced for utilization towards waste management activities,” he said

Chisango also said consumers would make a huge cost savings by adopting the eco-diapers and the council was going to benefit from the partnership since the revenue obtained would cater for the repair of HCC refuse trucks.

Meanwhile, a Bulawayo Environmental Management Agency (EMA) spokesperson Decent Ndlovu said the environmental watchdog has been patiently assessing the impact of diapers since they were introduced and believes the time has come to ban them.

“They give us serious problems because they contain human waste that exposes everyone to cholera and other diseases. So, when it rains the diapers waste flows to our rivers which are also our drinking water sources,” said Ndlovu.

A Harare resident, Shalom Chigwida said EMA should probe better measures of managing the environment because the initiative the HCC has taken would bring an eco-friendly environment.
