HARARE City Council (HCC) has raised the red flag over the proliferation of car sales along main roads in Harare, particularly the Willowvale, Glen View and Glen Norah areas.
In HCC’s recent minutes, it was noted that car sales facilities in suburban areas be removed and vehicles auctioned if not claimed within 30 days.
Council said it was worried that many car sales facilities in these areas were now being turned into dump sites and scrap yards for broken-down vehicles.
“In areas like Glen View , Willowvale Road and Glen Norah, some car sales facilities have been turned into scrap yards and most cars abandoned in car sales amenities, “ read part of the minutes.
HCC also said it would look into the matter, with a view to establish why car sales had mushroomed throughout the city .
“Council felt it was necessary to establish why car sales had sprouted throughout the city and whether lease agreements obliged lessees to restore the leased premises to their original status upon winding up business,” read a part of the minutes.
It was also resolved that council’s Environmental Management Committee should ensure that abandoned car shells were properly discarded.
City fathers also recommended that car sales facilities revert back to their original use.
