HIGHLANDERS’ Technical Manager Mark Harrison says he was really looking forward to raising the bar at Highlanders and bringing back the championship to the Bulawayo giants but has been forced to shelve his aspirations due to the social and economic impact wrought by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Harrison and Highlanders on Tuesday agreed to temporarily suspend the Briton’s contract until both parties are certain when the Premier Soccer League will resume.

Harrison will return to the UK to be with his family.

Highlanders spokesman Ronald Moyo said the former Harare City coach is expected to come back when the situation normalises with some sections alleging it could be the end of the road.

Harrison declined to comment if the suspension of contract means he can open negotiations with others club.

He also declined to shed light on whether he will still be receiving a salary during the said period.

It, however, appears the contract suspension will also mean the cessation of his salary as Highlanders battle to mitigate the effects of Covid-19 financial distress.

Speaking at a hastily arranged news conference at the Highlanders’ Club House on Tuesday, Harrison said he was disappointed to be ceasing his duties after only four months’ in charge.

“Look when I came here, my intention was to try and bring the championship back to Highlanders. It might not have happened this season but definitely wanted to make it happen in the second season,” Harrison said.

“I think the squad is definitely stronger than it was when we arrived.”

Harrison said after a slow preseason start he was hoping that, as the season progressed, his philosophy would shine through.

“Its a big disappointment for me. I was looking forward to the challenge and working at such a big club. With so much on offer it was going to be exciting times. Without a doubt. We would have an exciting season. We would’ve played some exciting football but that has been put on the back burner for now.”
