Econet side-steps administrators in latest Zimbabwe Gems donation crusade

Zimbabwe’s largest mobile operator Econet Wireless has taken an unprecedented step of canvassing for donations for the Zimbabwe Gems emphasising proceeds will go directly to the pockets of players.

This comes in light of unclear use of funds by the Zimbabwe Netball Association who have remained mum on how much was raised from a consented fundraising campaign that preceded the Netball World Cup in Liverpool.

In a terse statement posted on various social media platforms and sent to Econet users through short-message-service, the mobile giant urged Zimbabweans to give the side a homecoming they deserve.

Let’s celebrate the amazing performance of the Zim Gems at the Netball World Cup! Show your thanks by donating to EcoCash Biller Code: 379842. All proceeds go direct to the players,” Econet said, adding:

Every amount counts to give the ladies the homecoming they deserve!”

Zimbabwe finished 8th at their first ever World Cup, a tournament in which they opened their account with a convincing 79-49 victory over Sri Lanka to set the tone for an unforgettable tournament.

The tournament was not without its hiccups with the team holding a make-or-break meeting over contractual issues, hours before their Group F encounter against Malawi amid unresolved monetary concerns.

Despite the off field drama, the Gems still pushed their monetary misgivings into the shade and left an indelible footprint in Liverpool.
