Following the fatal accident in Dzivaresekwa last week, which claimed the lives of eight people, the commuter omnibus driver accused of causing the incident has been remanded in custody.
Gaylord Hunda, 27, represented by Stanley Mutandazi, appeared before Magistrate Batsirai Madzingira facing culpable homicide charges, and was remanded in custody pending a bail application.
The State alleges that on 19 March and along the Bulawayo road, Hunda was driving a Toyota Hiace omnibus picking up passengers who intended to travel to the city centre.
It is alleged that on approaching the Bulawayo road, the accused failed to give way to the traffic approaching from his right side at a controlled intersection.
Further allegations are that in trying to avoid an accident he swerved to the left side of the road where he hit a truck which was parked on the side of the road at the same time hitting a bystander.
It is the State’s case that he went on to be hit a truck which was proceeding straight and as a result eight people died whilst 12 passengers got seriously injured.
