Dereck Mpofu’s new ‘dirty’ video divides fans

AFRO-FUSION artiste  Dereck Mpofu’s latest video, Chimbozvizunza, has sent tongues wagging, at the same time drawing a cross-section of views from fans, with the majority stating that it is too ‘dirty’.

The song is a collaboration with on-fire Baba Harare, with the cast led by exotic dancer Bev Sibanda.

It was released on Tuesday and has already received rave reviews,  with some fans expressing reservations over the way Bev was dancing in the video.

The raunchy moves by Bev were so energetic such that they could even leave artistes in the mold of Nikki Minaj green with envy.

“The video is super quality, but I don’t think it’s for home viewing and the way Bev was dancing is just not proper in Africa and tradition,” wrote one fan on Twitter.

“I like the cinematography and the script, but the gyrating by Bev is not cool. You can’t watch that video at home with family,” added another fan.

However, some fans threw their weight behind Bev’s dance moves and argued that it was a way of expressing art.

“Music is art and so is dancing.

“It’s a form of expression and Bev was doing just that. The song talks about appreciating a woman’s God-given body and Bev was expressing that, celebrating her body,” Comfort Mupfupi, a Facebook user, said.

When contacted for comment, Mpofu said: “This is a case of Zimbabweans not appreciating our own.

“There is no nudity or vulgarity in this video. When such is done by a foreigner, it is called art. But when it is done by a local, it is called dirty.

“Every artiste goes through this, and it is part of the growing process.

“Jah Prayzah, Baba Harare and so on have gone through this, but my true fans have my back,” he said.

Dereck is one of the most recorded session vocalists in Zimbabwe, having worked on over 200 albums to date as a vocalist/vocal coach/producer with internationally acclaimed musicians such as Nicole C Mullen, the late Vuyo Mokoena, Albert Nyathi and renowned producers such as Clive Mono Mukundu.
