HARARE — The Grain Marketing Board’s artificial intelligence-powered silos are now storing more than 70,000 metric tonnes of commercial grain, reflecting growing uptake of the country’s new grain storage infrastructure, Cabinet heard Tuesday.
Cabinet said GMB currently holds 70,015.011 metric tonnes of third-party grain following the completion of the AI-powered silos and the introduction of commercial storage services offered directly by the board and through the Warehouse Receipt System.
The update was presented by Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development Minister Anxious Masuka as part of a report on the 2025/26 summer crops marketing season and the 2026 winter plan.
The commercial storage initiative complements Zimbabwe’s strategic grain reserves, which currently stand at 227,338 metric tonnes comprising maize, wheat and traditional grains.
Cabinet also reported that grain deliveries to GMB are 139% higher than during the same period last year, with the Agricultural and Rural Development Authority contributing nearly 90% of total deliveries.
The AI-powered silos form part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize agricultural infrastructure, improve grain handling and expand commercial storage capacity through the Warehouse Receipt System.
