Zimra urges students to embrace taxes

ZIMBABWE Revenue Authority Commissioner General Faith Mazani urged students at her Inaugural tax seminar to familiarise themselves with taxation issues.

Speaking at a seminar at the University of Zimbabwe, Mazani said one of Zimra’s main thrust was to engage with the people in order to build stronger relations which, in turn, would benefit the economy at large.

“It is all part of Zimra’s new strategic thrust to engage the people of Zimbabwe – the academia, business and captains of industry, among others, in order to build stronger partnerships for the benefit of the economy at large,” explained the Zimra chief.

She said similar tax seminars were going to be held at all universities and other tertiary institutions.

“This is the first of the so many tax seminars we are scheduled to hold at all universities and other tertiary institutions in Zimbabwe,“ Mazani said.

She said this initiative was important as it aimed to educate students on how taxes boost the economy of a country.

“ Students, you are the future of our economy and as such, you need to have a strong appreciation of how the success of economies the world over is hinged on tax compliance by the citizens,” she added.

Mazani said it was good to engage youths in tax issues in order to establish trust between tax collectors and their clients.

“On our part, we believe engaging them at an early age will help in building the trust which should always exist between Zimra and its valued clients,” she said.

This Inaugural meeting ran under the theme “Catch them Young”, where the message was being directed to the youths, particularly those in tertiary institutions.
