Simon Chabuka wins Mutare Mayoral race
Recently formed Citizen Coalition for Change (CCC) has claimed its first political score after the party’s candidate won the Mutare Mayoral elections held at Mutare Civic Centre today.
Councillor Simon Chabuka is now the new Mutare Mayor after beating MDC-T candidate Farai Bhiza by six votes to five.
The election came after MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora recalled Mutare Mayor Blessing Tandi on allegations of secretly working with Nelson Chamisa’s CCC.
Chamisa announced the formation of CCC on January 24 saying the move did not signal a break away from Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC legacy which had become a symbol of change but was a reinforcement of Tsvangirai’s hope for a better Zimbabwe.
Chamisa’s formation had been left hapless after Zimbabwe’s Supreme Court in 2020 handed the party name and assets to the Douglas Mwonzora led MDC-T.
Pressure had been mounting on Chamisa to rebrand and change the party name ahead of March 26 by-elections and the preceding nomination court which sat on January 26.
