Prosecutors Extract Videos in Rape Case Against Old Mutual Executive

HARARE – Prosecutors have extracted videos from the mobile phone of Old Mutual business development manager Musa Nyasha Dube Manyika, who is facing two counts of raping a University of Zimbabwe student.

Manyika, who appeared before magistrate Estere Chivasa on Tuesday, is accused of coercing the student—who was on an Old Mutual scholarship—into silence by threatening to have her funding withdrawn.

The trial, initially set to commence, was delayed after prosecutor Chido Gohori informed the court that investigators had retrieved videos from the complainant’s phone, which the State believes are crucial to its case. The prosecution must now serve the defense with the videos before proceedings can begin.

According to the State, the first alleged rape occurred in November 2022 when Manyika invited the student via WhatsApp to assist him in packing banners at Old Mutual Gardens. After picking her up from the University of Zimbabwe campus, he allegedly took her to his office, where he raped her. He later apologized and reportedly gave her a branded T-shirt, juice bottle, and cap, while warning her against reporting the incident, threatening to withdraw her scholarship.

The second incident allegedly took place on June 19, 2023, when Manyika requested to meet the student to discuss her career. After meeting at Ashbrittle Shops, he offered to drive her home but instead stopped on Belfast Road, where the State claims he adjusted the passenger seat, removed her trousers, and raped her. He then drove her home and again asked for forgiveness.

The trial is now set to commence on February 3.
