THE Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) on Thursday confirmed the arrest of three police officers and a prosecutor on bribery charges after they allegedly accepted stands as inducements to ensure the freedom of Harare City Council officials who are in court over prejudicing the council of US$1million.
Zim Morning Post can report that those arrested are Claudius Manjonga, Aaron Karuru, Obey Moyo (all from police) and Clemence Chimbari from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
“We have arrested three police officers and a prosecutor. DAI Claudius Majonga, DC Aaron Karuru, Assistant Commissioner Obey Moyo and Deputy Director CCD Chimbari from the NPA are presently detained at Avondale and Marlborough Police Stations,” said a highly placed Zacc official.
The arrested four officers allegedly irregularly received unserviced residential stands in Harare’s middle income suburb of Westlea from HCC’s top housing department employees who are currently facing allegations of defrauding the city of at least US$1 million through illegal land allocations.
The stands are alleged to have been inducements to ensure that council officials are able to obstruct the course of justice.
Zacc sources told Zim Morning Post that investigations were still underway but the paper trail evidence already shows that the residential stands were parcelled out without due process and with the intention to sway the course of justice.
“Interrogations took place and already we are aware that some officers, indeed, signed and collected the residential stands,” said the Zacc source.
