MUTARE – A Marange man appeared in court Friday after he was nabbed in illegal possession of 13 carats diamond worth over $1000 .
The man Augustine Majaya (43) from Chiadzwa in diamond rich Marange area on Friday appeared before Mutare Magistrate Tendai Mahwe facing charges of dealing or possession of diamonds without a permit or licence.
Majaya denied allegations and ruling was set for August 19.
It is the State’s case led by prosecutor Brian Goto that on February 19 2019 at around 0800hrs, detectives at Mutare Police received a tip off that Majaya was illegally in possession of diamonds and he was on his way from Chiadzwa to Mutare.
Detective Assistant Inspector Dliwe Mpofu teamed up with other detectives Ushe Magune, Elliot Muchariona and Collen Chidhakwa and intercepted the car that Majaya was driving at Mutare Teachers college along the Mutare-Masvingo highway.
The court was told that the detectives searched Majaya’s car and proceeded to search his body where they found him holding the five pieces of diamonds with his right hand.
He failed to produce the permit allowing him to be in possession of the gems leading to his arrest.
In his defence, Majaya argued that the diamonds belonged to a passenger.
“I was not in possession of any diamonds. They were recovered from the motor vehicle,” he said.
