HARARE City Council (HCC) is under fire for its sponsorship of sports teams, compromising service delivery in the process.
Residents raised concerns on the money that is channeled to sponsor Harare City Football Club.
The club is alleged to have gobbled millions of dollars at the expense of service delivery.
In an interview with the Zim Morning Post on Tuesday, Harare Residents Trust (HRT) director Precious Shumba said the city fathers were majoring in the minors.
“The water crisis in areas like Budiriro, Mabvuku and other high density suburbs is not improving, but the council choose to spend about ZWL10 million for football sponsorship,” Shumba lamented.
HCC spokesperson Michael Chideme said they are in the process of weaning off the team and find alternative sponsors.
“We are in the process of weaning off all our sports teams, it’s a process so we are encouraging our teams to find potential funders , weaning off is a process and we still in the process ,” he said
In his 2019 State of the City address, Harare mayor Herbert Gomba confirmed that the Sunshine Boys will have a different sponsor starting from next season.
“We are no longer going to continue sponsoring Harare City FC as we have other priorities,” said Gomba.
