HARARE City Council (HCC) will fork out ZWL600 000 to sponsor this year’s edition of the annual regional volleyball championships to be held in Lilongwe from December 13 to 22.
This windfall is despite the fact that the city fathers have failed to fulfil its service delivery mandate to rate payers.
According to the Information and Publicity Committee,Town Clerk Hosiah Chisango, participation of the team enhances Harare for tourist investment.
“Participation of the team would enhance HCC as a destination market in respect of tourist arrivals and investment, “said Chisango.
HCC said the volleyball club chairperson advised that the dinner penciled for November 29 is expected to raise ZWL 300 000 apart from the contributions.
In 2017, the team won gold at the Confederation of African Volleyball Zone VI Club Championships and represented the region at the CAVB Africa Women Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
Harare City women’s volleyball team has won several competitions, including the Harare Volleyball Open, Harare Volleyball League, Zimbabwe National League and Zone VI Championships.
Recently, Harare Mayor Herbert Gomba announced that Council was going to cut funding from Harare City FC as they implement austerity measures due to the depressing economic environment.
