Government urged to monitor foreign companies

ZIMBABWE Banks and Allied Workers’ Union (Zibawu) on Saturday demonstrated at the Marathon Race Runners sponsored by Old Mutual, saying government should pay close attention to foreign companies who they accuse of abusing and victimising employees.

This year’s  marathon runners event kicked off at Old Georgians Club in Groombridge, Harare, with winners in the first prize category for both males and females walking away with $2 000 while those in the half-marathon  got $500.

In an interview with Zim Morning Post, Zibawu said the concerned foreign companies feigned philanthropism through the funding of deserving public concerns on the one hand, while they acted with impunity against their own workers on the other.

“We are demonstrating against Old Mutual’s idea to sponsor marathon races while neglecting its own workers”.

“The company is able to spend more than $500 000.00 on the public, when its workers are wallowing in poverty,” the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed.

He also revealed how the company steals from its workers.

“Old Mutual steals workers’ wages in order to “sponsor” its purported acts of benevolence,” the source added.

The company has also failed to comply with the interbank rating system in the payment of its employees’ monthly salaries as other employers in Zimbabwe are doing.

According to the source, Old Mutual is busy victimising some of its workers perceived to be rebellious.
