Gwanda — Canadian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Adler Aristilde and U.S. Ambassador Pamela Tremont witnessed the reopening of Duration Gold’s Vubachikwe Mine Clinic in Gwanda, a key milestone for healthcare access in the mining community.
The clinic, which serves mine workers, their families, and the surrounding community, had been closed after an illegal strike forced Vumbachikwe Mine into care and maintenance two years ago. It has now reopened as the company pursues an ambitious plan to surpass its previous peak capacity.
“We know the service that is provided to the community through this place,” said Aristilde during the handover ceremony. “Public health and healthy communities are priorities for Canada and for the United States.”
The ceremony came during a familiarization tour of Duration Gold’s operations, including sites in Gaika, Kwekwe, and Vubachikwe. Aristilde praised the company’s investments and team.
“A very informative learning tour of Duration Gold’s mining sites of Gaika/Kwekwe & Vubuchikwe/Gwanda last week. I saw evidence of sizable investmentsand met a dynamic team doing good work. Also really enjoyed my 2nd visit to the Zimbabwe Midlands blessed with bountiful minerals,” he said.
Mine communications manager Robert Mukondiwa, speaking on behalf of managing director Alan Dolan, underscored the company’s desire to work with government in supporting national healthcare goals.
“Our ultimate aim is to return to a time when we could provide adequate healthcare not only to our workers and their dependents, but also to surrounding villages and beyond,” Mukondiwa said. “A healthy society is the foundation of a productive nation.”
Vubachikwe spokespersons emphasized that Duration Gold remains committed to its community operations and ongoing expansion efforts, despite past challenges.
“Against all odds, we are pushing forward,” Mukondiwa added.
