Diesel Scam Lands Ex-Deputy Minister and Truck Drivers in Jail

A former Zimbabwean deputy minister and his three co-accused will stay in jail until their sentencing date on November 16. They were found guilty of smuggling a large amount of diesel into the country without paying taxes.

Terrence Mukupe, who was once the Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Development, and the three truck drivers, Sam Kapisoriso, Joseph Taderera and Leonard Mudzuto, imported more than 138 000 litres of diesel in three tankers.

The fuel was supposed to be delivered to DRC, but they replaced it with water in Zimbabwe and sold the diesel illegally.

Justice Benjamin Chikowero postponed the sentencing to next week to weigh the arguments of the defence and prosecution lawyers.
