Avenues Clinic invests in healing with state-of-the-art ward renovations

HARARE – Avenues Clinic has unveiled its newly renovated pediatric and private wards, with management saying the upgrades are not just about appearance but also about improving clinical care and patient outcomes.

“It’s not just an investment for esthetics, it’s also for healing,” said General Manager Sibusisiwe Ndhlovu during a tour of the facility on Thursday. “We have renovated our pediatric ward as well as our private ward… a fresh look, fresh linen—most esthetics, wall replacements, and more.”

The ongoing refurbishment is part of a US$5 million capital injection from shareholders. Of that amount, US$2 million has already been spent, with US$1.2 million going towards clinical equipment and US$800,000 directed at facility upgrades.

“We are guided by our customers—the doctors who admit here. They’ve long requested that we modernize and restore our facilities,” Ndhlovu explained. “We’ve invested in cutting-edge technology to help our specialists operate more efficiently and achieve better outcomes for patients.”

Among the state-of-the-art additions are four A9 anesthetic machines and a KUSA precision surgical microscope, which can magnify images 1,000 times. “This allows our clinicians to locate and remove the root cause of a problem with unmatched accuracy,” said Ndhlovu.

Acting Principal Nursing Officer Elizabeth Mhanya highlighted the hospital’s growing success in neonatal care. “We have admitted babies as small as 645 grams in our neonatal ICU and watched them grow to 1.8 kilograms,” she said. “This winter alone, we’ve seen remarkable recoveries.”

Mhanya also emphasized that most rooms at Avenues Clinic are convertible into intensive care units. “We can ventilate a patient from virtually anywhere in the hospital, including the casualty section,” she noted.

Angela Mudzimiri, Sister-in-Charge of the private and pediatric ward, said the pediatric wing accommodates up to 16 patients and is designed for privacy and round-the-clock attention.

“We’ve installed nurse call bells in every room, and our nurses conduct hourly rounds. If something arises in between, patients or guardians can just press a button and help is immediate,” Mudzimiri said.

The facility also has a dedicated emergency drug room for quick response and a Rapid Response Team reachable via internal line 2155 to deal with emergencies.

Ndhlovu said Avenues Clinic is complementing government efforts to revitalize Zimbabwe’s health sector. “We’re working closely with public hospitals,” she said, citing a successful thoracic surgery collaboration with Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and another upcoming cardiac surgery partnership.

“We believe that as private players, we are only as strong as our public sector. We’re in this together.”

Despite perceptions of private care being more expensive, Ndhlovu insists Avenues offers competitive value. “We have highly specialized nurses, 24/7 emergency readiness, and top-grade equipment. For what we offer, the pricing is justified.”

The renovations mark a significant step in Avenues Clinic’s commitment to delivering world-class healthcare.
