Rocks, Tuskers make positive starts despite rain disruption

Southern Rocks – 202-4 in 61.2 overs (Panashe Taruvinga 65*, Tafadzwa Tsiga 52*, Innocent Kaia 48; Graeme Cremer 3/74, Mike Chinouya 1/41)

Rhinos –

Day 1 – Stumps

Unbeaten fifties from Panashe Taruvinga and Tafadzwa Tsiga ensured Southern Rocks closed a rain-shortened opening day on a promising 202 for four against Rhinos in their Logan Cup clash at Kwekwe Sports Club on Thursday.

Rocks got off to a solid start after winning the toss and opting to bat, thanks to a 62-run opening stand between Matthew Campbell and Innocent Kaia.

Campbell adopted a watchful approach in his 22, while Kaia played fluently for his 48 before both fell to catches off the bowling of veteran leg-spinner Graeme Cremer.

Cremer later claimed his third wicket when he bowled Johnathan Campbell for a duck.

With Roy Kaia having been trapped lbw by pacer Mike Chinouya for just five, Rocks were wobbling at 115 for four.

However, Taruvinga and Tsiga weathered the storm – both literally and figuratively.

The pair stitched together a calm, unbeaten 87-run stand before rain brought an early end to proceedings.

Taruvinga was unbeaten on 65, with Tsiga giving solid support on 52, as Rocks finished the curtailed day in a strong position.

Tuskers – 133-2 in 49 overs (Tafara Mupariwa 65*, Brian Chari 40*, Tanunurwa Makoni 20; Tendai Chatara 1/26, Wellington Masakadza 1/27)

Mountaineers –

Day 1 – Stumps

A composed 78-run partnership between Tafara Mupariwa and Brian Chari helped Tuskers post 133 for two at stumps on a weather-hit first day of their Logan Cup encounter against Mountaineers at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Thursday.

Persistent morning showers delayed the start until after lunch, prompting Mountaineers to bowl first upon winning the toss.

Their decision paid early dividends when Tendai Chatara had Bright Phiri lbw without scoring.

Tanunurwa Makoni dug in for a patient 20 off 82 deliveries before he too fell – caught by Chatara off Wellington Masakadza’s spin – with the score at 55 for two.

From there, Mupariwa and Chari took control, batting through the remainder of the day with composure on a slow track.

Mupariwa, playing with authority, reached 65 not out, while Chari finished unbeaten on 40, guiding Tuskers to a steady 133 for two at the close.
