Auxillia Mnangagwa urges clean city

First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa on Friday said authorities need to rethink waste management strategies that are cost effective and sustainable in their areas of Jurisdiction.

In a speech read on her behalf by the environmental, climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu in Mrewa, Auxillia said local authorities should do more to address waste management challenges in the areas they govern.

“Above all, local authorities need to rethink waste management strategies and establish models that are cost effective, efficient and sustainable, they must be proactive in addressing waste management challenges in their areas of jurisdiction,” she said.

The First Lady highlighted an investment strategy which had been made in the recycling sector with focus on various waste streams such as plastic, paper and scrap metal.

“I therefore urge local authorities to play a principle role in the agenda by allocating space for recycling and supporting the upcoming recycles to establish and grow,” she continued.

The First Lady also emphasised that littering and dumping should be avoided at all costs as it carries a penalty under the law.

“I want to remind all citizens of this beautiful country that littering and dumping are prosecutable offences that should be avoided at all costs,” she said.

She spoke as the Environment Management Authority together with law enforcement agencies have been instructed to intensify monitoring to ensure there are enough bins in all public places such as business centres, streets, roads , lay-bys and public transport.
