War veterans arrested over “hunger” protest

By Nyasha Chuma

SEVERAL war veterans were on Tuesday arrested at Harare’s Africa Unity Square for staging a protest demanding an upward review of their earnings.

In a statement, their lawyers said police had separately detained 40 former liberation war veterans at Harare Central Police Station, Rhodesville Police Station and Highlands Police Station.

The war veterans, represented by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, were yet to be advised of the charges they were facing at the time of publishing.

The liberation struggle fighters are pressing the President Emmerson Mnanagwa led government to give them various perks for their war sacrifices which brought independence to Zimbabwe four decades ago.

The war veterans, who received gratuities of up to $50,000 each in 1997, said their welfare remained disproportionate to their contribution.

War veterans’ quest for official recognition of their war sacrifices has occupied a prominent role in the politics of post-independent Zimbabwe.
