The United Kingdom (UK) has provided food aid worth $49million to Zimbabwe as the country is facing acute food shortages following a server drought in the last farming season.
This was announced by UK’s International Development Secretary Alok Sharma today.
These funds are to allow for Zimbabweans to have life-saving access to food and water.
“The UK stands with the people of Zimbabwe at a time when millions are at risk of starvation and disease. Through trusted partners we will continue to give families access to food and clean water, and support children to gain a decent education,” he said
He added that UK will help Zimbabwe from sinking especially during the ongoing food and economic crisis it is facing which was compounded by devastating tropical cyclone Idai in the beginning of the year which affected most of eastern and southern eastern parts of the country.
However Sharma appealed to the government to see to their end of the bargain in helping Zimbabwe.
This comes after Miinister of Finance Mthuli Ncube said his ministry will use the budget surplus to support affected communities.
“The Government of Zimbabwe must do more to deliver the promised fundamental political and economic reforms and take responsibility for the humanitarian crisis affecting its people,” Sharma added.
According to the government approximately seven million people face hunger.
