Special Anti-Corruption Unit swoops in on Harare councillors, journalists

MDC Alliance Harare councillors and three journalists were on Thursday arrested by the Special Anti-Corruption Unit and taken to Harare Central Police Station, Zim Morning Post has heard.

The councillors were about to make the closing prayers when the anti-corruption unit swooped in on them.

It is not immediately clear why the about 28 councillors are still detained (1830hr).

“We are detained and are at Harare Central Police Station.

“We really don’t know why all this is happening.

“How do we hold meetings in an environment of fear,” said one councillor who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, plans are underway by the MDC Alliance-led council to recall all suspended senior officials amid claims of being hamstrung.

Among those detained are Harare City Council are heads of departments and journalists.

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume condemned the move by the anti corruption crack unit for not following due process.

“It is sad that the system is fighting corruption with corruption without following due process.

“Such omnibus arrests should be condemned. How could they arrest everyone including the flies in the building. They have to follow due process not this blatant abuse of office so that they are seen as if they are doing their work,” Mafume said.
