The plot to arrest head of the Special Anti-Corruption Unit (SACU), Thabani Mpofu, has thickened amid reports of discord in how anti-graft crack teams have been operating, Zim Morning Post has heard.
Insiders say Mpofu’s imminent arrest is being engineered by top officials in the security sector who want to effect the arrest at a time when President Emmerson Mnangagwa is on his annual leave.
Zim Morning Post is informed that Mpofu has raffled a lot of feathers in the security sector following the arrest of former CID Director Chrispen Charumbira over a litany of abuse of office charges. Mpofu further arrested various top police bosses including Assistant Commissioners and Inspectors.
“It is a manifestation of deep rooted clash of interests in the bodies mandated to fight graft,” the source said.
“Some are saying Mpofu has been abusing his power to deal with political opponents,” the source said.
“There is a push involving top brass at ZRP and some directors at CIO who have have had their feathers ruffled by Mpofu and there have since been a push to get him arrested on extortion charges involving an Indian only identified as Alli,” said the source.
Mpofu, since his appointment, has effected the arrest of high profile officials in Government and the security sector.
