New kid on the block Asper vows to revive rhumba music

THERE hasbeen a dearth of the Rhumba music genre in the country with  hip-hop and  Zimdancehall taking over.

However, an ambitious rhumba musician Asper, born Lawrence Chibvongodze has vowed to fill in the void , with  only Diamond Musica being the major challenger.

He bemoaned the dearth of rhumba music and said he will revive it.

“I feel sad that the genre has been neglected yet our parents used to listen to it and I want to revive it,” he said.

Asper took interest in music when he was still a child, staying in Glen Norah B, Harare, with his parents.

The Original God singer was born on August 20, 1996, at Rutsanana Clinic  in Glen- Norah.

Asper learnt music by listening to his idol Juntal, fellow rhumba singer and sensational gospel hip-hop artiste Mudiwa Hood and the Luv Yemusoja hit-maker, Sniper Storm.

Early on, young Asper would  listen a lot of Jamaican music, leading to his singing gospel reggae in 2011.

In June 2018, his life-long dream was fulfilled when he met one of his icons, local rhumba singer Farai ‘Juntal’ Serima, at Rocklife studio.

Juntal urged him to switch to rhumba due his style and vocals, arguing that would take him places once he mastered the rhumba tempo.

He followed that advice and started singing rhumba, launching an album called Making History in May 2019.

Asper told Zim Morning Post that he one day wishes to train young gospel rhumba groups.

Asper spoke highly of his love for music, saying it was good for self-expression and talking to masses.
