Lockdown: Evicted families sleep in the open

MUTARE – Some families evicted from Mutare City council ‘s sewerage works compound have been living in the open for more than two weeks despite the government’s directive for people to stay home during the 21-day lockdown period, Zim Morning Post can report.
The families numbering to 13, include retired council workers, widows and relatives of the deceased workers among others.
Council police officers, a fortnight ago, evicted the families from the council houses.
They had their property dumped in the open and they said they do not have anywhere to go.
“I have been living at these premises for more than 30 years. My husband died in 2010 and l do not have anywhere to go,” said a tearful widow in an interview with Zim Morning Post on Monday.
The Member of Parliament for the area Regai Tsunga (MDC) said there was need to address the urgent plight of the evicted families taking into consideration of the coronavirus scourge.
“I appreciate that the evictions are a result of a court order, but I lament that prior measures were not taken to ensure the protection of the constitutional rights of the victims – including the right to shelter, right to health, right to a clean environment, right to potable water and the right to a clean environment among other rights in the wake of CoVID-19,” said Tsunga.
“Alternative settlements for relocation must be found to enable the evicted families re-establish themselves in a set up that guarantees them access to social services for sustainable livelihoods,” Tsunga said.
Asked for a comment on the families’ plight in the wake of the Covid -19 pandemic, the Mutare City Council spokesman Spren Mutiwi said: “We will check on that, but the families were given eviction notices.”
Tsunga and well wishers have been assisting the families with some food stuffs among other basic needs and necessities.
