A Ruwa based man has been arrested after conniving with school authorities to dupe Admiral Tait Primary School, 200 Point of Lay chickens worth Z$257,200.
The Point of Lay chickens were meant for the school’s agriculture class but Bister Chinodya diverted them for personal use.
Chinodya, who has no authority to act on behalf of the school, collected the chickens on behalf of the school using proof of payment documents, in what is suspected to be an inside job.
The school chairman George Mungoni reported the matter to Rhodesville Police Station under RRB number 709708, leading to Chinodya’s arrest.
It is alleged that on May 12, Admiral Tait Primary School made a payment of ZWL$257,200 to Hukuluku CBZ account number 01125837780015.
Chinodya went on to collect the chickens on 17 May 2021 ostensibly on behalf of the school but without permission to do so.
“We managed to get the man Bister Chinodya who collected the school chickens from the supplier which is Hukuluku and the man is now in police custody as we speak,” Mungoni said.
“Investigations are underway and I hope and believe police will assist us to recover our chickens and we are going to investigate again how he got the proof of payment which he used to collect the chickens.”
Chinodya is said to have given the school 80 chickens in a bid to cover his tracks but the school rejected them as they are not at the point of laying eggs such as the ones stolen.
Reached for comment, the schools headmistress Locardia Mbirimi (63) was evasive.
“Who are you? What do you want? If you need a comment , I can’t give you over the phone. Come to school and see me on Wednesday 21 July,” she said.
Upon further probing she added: “I only authorized (purchase) since I was convinced by quotations that Hukuluku was the sole supplier of the point of lay chickens so I gave them a green light.”
It is not clear how much more underhand deals at the school are prejudicing the institution and who are the insiders abetting the criminal activities.
